Home Automation
Is the centralised control of lighting, appliances, irrigation,
air-conditioning, water-features, distributed audio and home
theatre. It typically consists of a management system that controls
different "modules" that ultimately control all your electrical and
electronic devices. It has a level of green efficiency managing your
lighting, air-con, under floor heating, water-features and audio
visual whilst you are away or not in the room. The most powerful
function is the scene control which, for example, one touch of the
"watch TV" button can dim the lights based on time of day, set the
air-con, close the curtains, switch the TV, DVD and Receiver on and
set them to the correct channel.

Distributed Audio
Otherwise known as piped music, allows each room in the house to
listen to their own music or view their own video. Your son
could be listening to heavy metal in his room, whilst you enjoy
classical music in the kitchen. When entertaining, all rooms
could output the same music, essentially giving the piped music
effect throughout the home. This is the ultimate in home
entertainment.
Generally, distributed audio systems have a source/volume
keypad in each room and depending on the system has between 4
and 6 source inputs. Those inputs can be accessed from each
"zone" of audio distribution. Zones can amount to between 1 and
16 depending on the size of your home. Typically sources are 1.
DStv1 2. DStv2 3. Media Center 4. DVD 5. CD and 6. Tuner. So in
a distributed audio home you could walk into a room choose which
source of music/video you would like to access and the music
will be generated from the in-ceiling speakers and video will
change on your TV. This is a one touch solution.
True benefits of distributed audio comes when home automation
is included in your home which could manage your distributed
audio/video system. A light switch could be programmed to play
your favourite music play list, or activate a prayer calling. We
are only limited by your imagination.

Home TheatreThis
is separate to your distributed audio system and is typically
installed in a TV room or dedicated home theatre. It consists of
a plasma/LCD or projector and screen, DVD player, Receiver and a
surround sound speaker set. There are cheap systems on the
market from the usual commercial retailers but we strongly
suggest a professional system here. A great idea would be to
visit our showroom and listen to how movies should be watched,
after all a movie is where we escape reality and involve
ourselves in a story-line. To really participate in the movie
you need to see and feel what the director intended you to feel
and lose yourself completely. This can only be achieved with a
quality surround sound setup.
Important to remember when buying a receiver or amplifier, is
that high-definition will be launching in South Africa in 2009.
Make sure your receiver is HDMI friendly or you will be wasting
your money. All home theatre setups from Hometek are
high-definition capable and will up-scale analogue signals from
your current DVD and DStv to a digital format.
